Adam Grant Module 3: Capturing Effective Feedback: Challenge Networks
Module 3 Highlights:
“Vistage is just actually built for this. So, you already have a lot of the mechanisms in place.”
- Too many leaders rely on their support networks. Challenge networks are a group of thoughtful critics — disagreeable Givers — whom you trust to help leaders see their own blind spots.
- Anyone in a leadership role needs a challenge network. The first step is to make it clear to those you select to be in this network what you want from them.
Feedback from all levels:
- One example shared was a model where employees were evaluated on how they constructively challenged the people above them.
- The cascading effect of soliciting feedback as a leader is profound. Employees or junior leaders see that as a signal that they have a voice.
Module 3 discussion questions:
- Share a time that this group has challenged you. What was the outcome?
- How can we be an even better Challenge network for each other? How do we avoid groupthink?
- What challenge networks exist inside your organization to enable rethinking and capturing different perspectives?
- How would you rate the “second score” of how receptive you and your leadership team are to receiving feedback from each other or even lower levels in the organization?
